This is in one of the second grade classrooms I teach in at École Jules Ferry. (Due to a schedule conflict on Monday, the 2nd grade teacher and I rescheduled English for today). In the US, students have pencil boxes that they keep in their desk. In France, students have these trays that they leave out on their desk.
Note the yellow highlighter... each student has one or several highlighters in their tray. When I arrived the students were finishing up a reading exercise that involved highlighting. The teacher was reading aloud the same passage the students has in front of them, then the teacher identified particular words within the text for the students to highlight. I don't think I owned a highlighter until I was in high school.
