7 mai 2011 - Plantation du mai

SAMEDI
Saturday market.
Roses in bloom around the city.
Plantation du mai. The mayor of Sarlat takes a photo of the Conseil Municipal d'Enfants standing in front of the arbre du mai (maypole).
French flags cover a sign that reads Honneur aux élus du Conseil Municpal d'Enfants (Honor to the Elected [officials] from the Youth City Council).
Following the unveiling of the maypole we gather inside the centre culturel and listen while two representatives from the Youth City Council give a presentation about the history and significance of the maypole.
The way the Sarladais exhibit the maypole is particular to Périgord. A tree is found in the forest, brought back to town, decorated with flags, ribbons, and a sign expressing to the effect "honor to our elected officials." Maypoles are also used to honor other people in society such as newlyweds and business owners. Prior to this I had seen tall poles outside business establishments with a sign reading honneur aux patrons (honor the owners) though I never knew that the tradition stemmed from the maypole. I have never seen this type of thing in other parts of France.
And of course, no gathering is complete without drinks and appetizers.
